Are you ready to kick off your outdoor adventure in 2023? The activities in this post will help scratch that outdoor itch and get a little fresh air while doing it. I have 10 of the best outdoor activities listed for you, and the best part is that they can be done by anyone.

So, whether you are an outdoor enthusiast or just looking to get a little sunlight and exercise, these activities will get the job done.

What Are the Best Outdoor Activity Ideas?

This list isn’t all-in-encompassing, but it is the list of outdoor activities that I and others around me have found enjoyment in. Additionally, these activities are a fun way to get the family and friends together. I hope that this list will help you to enjoy the outdoors as much as I have and eventually create your own outdoor bucket list.

Trail Running

Want to see the outdoors and get in some needed exercise? Strap on your running shoes and hit the trails! Trail running offers a thrilling combination of fitness and exploration as you navigate rugged terrains, conquer challenging inclines, and immerse yourself in breathtaking natural surroundings.

It is a fun way to get that needed exercise in. Just don’t forget to stop and take pictures. Trail running is one of the most popular activities on this list where I live in Southern California and my favorite. It has great health benefits.

I like to mix things up and put on a rucksack and run the trails to give myself a little extra challenge. If you are not into the extra challenge, then really all you need to begin is a good pair of shoes and a way to get to the trail.

All you need for this activity is a good pair of shoes. There are a lot of great apps that will tell you where trails are and the difficulty. What trail you run is only dependent on where you are willing to travel, and when that trail is no longer a challenge pick a new trail. Also, if you don’t want to run alone this is a fun activity that the whole family can enjoy.

Hiking

Have you ever wanted to see breathtaking views or scenes that only seem to exist in paintings or pictures on the internet? Then hiking may be the activity for you. Whether it’s just long walks or an ambitious trek, hiking allows you to explore diverse landscapes, breathe in fresh air, and reconnect with the great outdoors and nature.

Not to mention that you can go hiking in a national park. You can set out early morning and hike all day. Once you have mastered local parks and then try some of the more advanced hikes around the world.

I am a big fan of the hills in Southern California, but that hasn’t kept me from hiking in Jordan, Georgia (the country of course), and a few of the other U.S. states.

The best part about hiking is that you can go as far and as long as you want. You may just need to pack a backpack. If you are tackling smaller hikes that take less than a few hours to complete, then you may only need water, snacks, and some bug repellant in a backpack.

However, if you are looking to take on hikes like some of the mountains in Hawaii, you may need better equipment to ensure that you have the best and most enjoyable experience. I highly recommend taking on an overnight hike at some point in your life. Long hikes are made for an unforgettable adventure that you won’t forget.

Cycling

If you need just a little bit more excitement in your outdoor activity, then hop on your bike and embark on thrilling cycling expeditions. Whether you choose picturesque country roads or adrenaline-pumping mountain trails, cycling offers an exhilarating way to explore the great outdoors while getting your heart pumping.

This can either be a nice enjoyable bike ride that can be done with others, or it can be a fast-paced mountain adventure. Equipment plays a bigger role in this activity. Mountain bikes aren’t the best for road riding, and road bikes aren’t ideal for riding up and down mountains and hills.

Just like other extreme sports, mountain biking carries with it risks, but the enjoyment and adrenaline rush is second to none. The bikes themselves can be quite expensive. However, there are pedal-assisted electric bikes that can help those who want to try out cycling and get into better shape without overexerting themselves.

Camping

If you are looking to escape the noise of everyday life, then camping may be what you are looking for. Set up your tent, gather around a campfire, and spend nights under the starry sky. Camping allows you to disconnect from technology, reconnect with family members, and experience the tranquility of nature.

Camping can even be a fun activity that can be done in your backyard. Then when you are feeling adventurous find a campground or National Park that allows camping for the ultimate experience. You will need a few things to ensure that your camping trip is safe and fun for all of those involved.

Camping gear includes a tent, a sleeping bag, a way to make food, personal items, and good company to name a few. However, the trips can start small with fewer items with shorter stays until you get used to it. So, if you’re looking to take a few days off from the real world and spend them under the night sky, or maybe you want to do a little wildlife watching. Then camping is the best way to go.

Geocaching

If you like treasure hunts, then unleash your inner explorer with geocaching, a thrilling treasure hunt that combines technology and adventure. Armed with a GPS device or smartphone, search for hidden caches, solve puzzles, and uncover secret treasures in outdoor locations near and far. It is an activity that most people never knew existed.

All you need to do is look up your local geocaching websites or meetups and register for one. They are like a scavenger hunt. The idea is that you use GPS to find the logbooks and caches. You then sign the logbook, take something from the cache, and leave something in the cache. That’s right you should leave something as well as take something. This ensures that the game continues for others.

You do not need anything outside of a pencil and some type of GPS, but most people just use their phones. So that will work. Each geocaching event will list what you will need and the difficulty levels of that event. These are a lot of fun and can help you learn something new about your local area.

Kayaking

If you need to cool off from a hot day, then take to the water with kayaking, an exciting activity that allows you to navigate serene lakes, meandering rivers, and even challenging rapids. Enjoy the tranquility of gliding across water surfaces while taking in stunning natural landscapes. Kayaking can be incredibly calming while remaining a physical activity.

First, you are going to need to either buy or rent a kayak. While they are not the most expensive things in the world, they do come in various price ranges. Rentals are usually reasonably priced. This activity can be limited by the time of the year. If you are kayaking in cold water, then you may need a wet suit.

A kayaking trip is unforgettable. You get to spend time out in the water, and depending on the area you may get to see nature in its natural habitat. There are incredible places all over the world to kayak.

Rock Climbing

Challenge your limits and embark on rock climbing adventures. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced climber, there are climbing routes for all skill levels. Conquer rocky faces, develop strength, and experience the thrill of reaching new heights, and if you want you can find rock climbing gyms that will help better prepare you for the real thing.

It can be a thrilling experience that should be enjoyed by more people. However, it is a dangerous activity, and that is why fewer people try this activity. It can be dependent on your physical limitation. However, if you are up to the challenge there are some things you will need. You will need climbing equipment which can become expensive the more you buy.

Then you will need someone to go with you for safety. Lastly, you will need to find a place that will allow you to climb that area. This is not an all-encompassing list by no means. If this is too much for you at the moment, I recommend trying indoor rock-climbing gyms. It is tailored to all fitness levels, experience levels, and you do not need your equipment.

Rock Climbing is a great outdoor workout. It can help increase overall strength and conditioning including increases in core strength. Don’t let the physical part of it get in the way of the fun though. Go out and have fun just know your physical limitations.

Stand-Up Paddle Boarding

If the heat has got you down, then you may want to try stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) for a unique and thrilling water adventure. Stand on a paddleboard, paddle through calm waters, and feel the serenity and freedom of being at one with nature while enjoying scenic views. Water sports offer a different way of experiencing the outdoors that a lot of people don’t try.

To get started you will need a board and a paddle, but it is recommended that you also bring some type of floatation device. While buying a paddle board may be too much money, some places rent them or sell used ones. Don’t let the price get in the way of a great time.

The experience from paddle boarding can be calm and enjoyable where you go out and find a quiet spot on a lake or the ocean and enjoy your time. You can also use paddle boarding to learn to surf as well. It is easier to paddleboard on smaller waves, but you can ride them for longer, and it is a great feeling catching your first wave and feeling the rushing water hitting you.

Skiing/ Snowboarding

If love the snow and cold weather, then hit the slopes and embrace the adrenaline rush of skiing or snowboarding. Whether you’re a seasoned snow enthusiast or a newbie, sliding down snow-covered mountains offers an exhilarating experience that combines speed, skill, and stunning snowy landscapes.

Snowboarding and skiing can be a relaxing experience or an adrenaline rush depending on your skill level and comfort. Most places rent both. So, you don’t have to buy anything outside of cold weather clothing.

If the cold or snow is not your thing you may want to try sandboarding or dune surfing. This is a great alternative that allows you to see the beauty of sand dunes instead of snow-covered mountains. Rental equipment is harder to find, but sandboards aren’t as expensive as their snow counterparts.

Photography

If none of the other activities seem like a fit, then combine your love for the outdoors with the art of photography. Capture breathtaking landscapes, wildlife encounters, and thrilling outdoor moments. Whether you use a professional camera or simply your smartphone, photography allows you to document and share your outdoor adventures.

This activity can be very easy to start because most people already have cameras on their cell phone. Then as you get more experienced you may want to buy better camera equipment. There are limitless ways to enjoy photography. You can have fun with this activity day or night.
